No-fee kiosks let you pay fines owed to 36th District Court
By SUSAN TOMPOR | Detroit Free Press –
Owe money to the 36th District Court in Detroit? Beginning Monday, consumers will be able to pay those traffic tickets and fines with cash or a credit card at about 50 kiosks without having to travel to the downtown courthouse.
The no-fee kiosk locations in neighborhoods mean people do not have to pay to park, go through security and wait in a line to pay their fines. The theory is that the kiosks will help people save time, costs and encourage prompt payment.
People who use the kiosks can either type in their name or scan the barcode on their driver’s license. The kiosk — which is run by the DivDat kiosk network — automatically displays any balances owed.
The kiosks are linked in real time with the court’s case management system, the Judicial Information System, to provide amounts owed as well as printed or emailed payment receipts.
The kiosk system is already in place to enable consumers to pay DTE Energy bills, Detroit Water bills, Wayne County Delinquent Taxes or current city of Detroit taxes, as well as some other bills.
The kiosk system can help consumers who do not have checking accounts and are unable to easily pay a bill in the mail, as well.
“The 36th District Court is embracing this technology to make payment methods more convenient for people and potentially increase collections,” said the court’s Chief Judge Nancy M. Blount
The DivDat Kiosk Network is run by a privately held company in Detroit with production offices in Ferndale.
